Addressed to Mr. J. J. Cotman
    Golden Cross,
    Charing Cross, London.

    My dear John,
After having promised that I would write to you soon I should not think I was acting kindly did I suffer this packet to go without sending you a line, and after you have so affectionately requested me to write, but you will my dear John find it a very stupid scrap with nothing in it that can give you or any one else pleasure, when you hear from me Again I will endeavour to pick up some thing like news to tell you till then rest satisfied with this. I think John you must have looked almost as grand as the King in his state carriage with your splendid writing case before you, how much I should have liked to have seen you surrounded as you say with such a number of folks. I am now going to give you another piece of advice which is to refer to your dictionary whenever you write to either Mr. Geldart or Arthur Dixon as there are several words spelt wrong in your letter which words I will tell you here / panels, hireing, stayed, writeing, inclose, they are all corrected for you. I am very glad to find that amongst all your gaiety you can now and then think of me, it adds much to my pleasure here. I can assure you, you are never forgotten by me. Should we be able to send your sponge this time you shall have it with kind love to you and papa believe me ever to remain
    Your very affectionate sister
    Anne Cotman.
