    Brandsby.

    Dear Cotman,

This is the first world day I have spent at home for many weeks. I [[have]] arrived here a few days ago & found your afflicting letter, but after a few hours rest I had to hurry away to Alnwick, to attend the election there, from whence I returned last night.
Most truly am I hurt at the tenor of your letter, as when we last met, your prospects did not appear to be disheartening. Be assured, my dear friend, that the offer of assistance which I made when we last met, I am not disposed to retract, and if you will explain to me your situation more in detail I will do what I can for you.
I am still engaged in an expensive law suit for the recovery of White Knights, and must submit to the vexations of the law's delays for some time to come. though ultimately I have every hope of success. This though it limits my means for the present, shall not prevent my rendering you all the service in my power.
I cannot exactly make out your address, but trust that this will find its way to you, & that I shall soon hear again from you when you are more composed & better able to explain your present plans.
Believe me, Most sincerely yours, Francis Cholmeley.
