    time of life; and Mr. Holmes enthusiastic turn of mind would make him a singularly dangerous man to follow.
    No, my friend, there is but one line for you to pursue; and it is the line of duty, and will be that of happiness. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have done all in your power to raise yourself, and have failed by no fault of your own, and [[wd]] end at last in full as high a place as at your birth there could be any reason to expect.
    (pencil note in margin) This passage reads peculiarly but it is all I can make of it.
    I will take care of your payment to ye Rock, the necessity for dropping which there is happily no reason to fear; for a sum of money equal to about ½ year annual [[pension]] premium could be raised by the sale of your additions; and such a step may possibly be desirable. The bonus will not be declared until next month, and could not therefore be mentioned in the letter I return.
