    To Dawson Turner Esq.
    May 13 1824.

    [pencil notes] [Norwich]
    [Dictated perhaps to Miles Edward}

    Dear Sir

    I was taken so very ill yesterday that I find it quite impossible to attend at Yarmouth this week, or even to avail myself of the little liberty ill-health imposes on me, by employing its few hours advantageously. Lessons implanted in early life, like Hope, hold their dominion long. But adversity shakes lessons, Hope and all our best feelings strangely - and where are we then? In a field of doubt & with distress!
    Dear Sir,
    Your obedient & obliged servant
    J.S.Cotman.
