model Girtin). That Cotman, like his youthful
Constable, may well have been allowed to see
his pictures, including the Bourdon long before
The Return of the Ark was lent to the British
Institution for general study in 1819. It passed
to the National Gallery in 1826.
The comparative absence of definite influence from
Bourdon in Cotman's later paintings can be
explained by the overwhelming influence of
Turner, but the 'Classical' type of trees
& buildings persists in the drawings &
indicates that Bourdon was not so much
forgotten as submerged in Cotman's newer
    passion for sight atmosphere.
    Thanking you once again
    Believe me yours sincerely
    C Holmes
