Cotmania. Vol. VI. 1930-31

Cotman's "Llanthony Abbey " (Illustrated) was painted in the same year as Girtin's
"Guisborough Abbey," when Cotman was but nineteen and Girtin twenty-six, the year
before Girtin's untimely death.
J. M. W. Turner, so well represented in the National Collections, is here represented
by a delicate pencil drawing of the Radcliffe Camera at Oxford (possibly a sketch for his
aquatint of Brasenose College) and also by a small sketch of the Falls of Schaffhausen. A
magnificent watercolour, "Sea Marsh," by the less famous William Turner, of Oxford, is
the work of an artist whose name has deserved a wider recognition.
Cornelius Varley, brother of the better known John Varley, both of whom are to be
found in the Collection, seems in his "View near St. Albans," with its broad washes, almost
to have anticipated the work of Wilson Steer.
Among the more notable watercolours may also be mentioned:—" Landscape," by
Joseph Farington, the author of the Farington Diaries; "Old Weston Church, Bath," by
Thomas Gainsborough ; "Ambleside," dated 1784, by Francis Towne ; "Road Through a
Wood," by Thomas Monro ; "Isle of Wight," by Thomas Rowlandson ; "Seine and
Tuileries," by T. Shotter Boys ; "Val d'Aosta," by John Frederick Lewis and "Distant View
of Oxford," by William Delamotte.
