    Notes made with J.J.C. July 12. 1877.
He (J.S.C.) was prevented at times from sending the
necessary works for exhibitions to enable him to retain
his membership, and on such occasions would get
my brother, Miles Edmund, to commence a drawing for
him, which he would afterwards complete & add his
signature. One of his two drawings so exhibited & which
was in a great measure the work of my brother was
subsequently engraved as his father's. The subject was
'A Danish Vessel off Yarmouth, unloading Timber',
my father was in no way taught by
Crome, He was self taught. I am not aware of
his having had any drawing masters. He took to
sketching very early in his life, and during his holidays from school
would wander away for this purpose. He adapted
himself to a style purely his own.
    . . . . . . . . . . .
We had a boat called 'The Jessie'. My father, Miles
& myself spent our entire Summer in it sketching
    on the Medway. [1831]
My father lost no opportunity in studying the works of
    the Old Masters.
He also told Reeve the story about the drawing of
the Cat at the Grammar School.
