    Dec 3. Went to Sir R. Witt's house, 32 Portman Square.
    It is stacked with solander cases containing reproductions.
    Did 1 1/2 of the 4 Cotman cases. Many oils in U.S.A!
    Lady Witt came & showed me her original J.S.C drawings
    two are autumn 1841. dated drawings.

    In a novel by John Owen, "The Shepherd and the Child", 1929. The Shepherd enters an
    antique shop to buy a bird in a box. 'The other
    day he [the antique dealer] sold a reputed Cotman,
    the authenticity of which he was not prepared to assert,
    to a nouveau riche for a price that only a blind
    man would have consented to pay".
