Two boxes of drawings at the ashmolean museum - Note by C.F. Bell - "Inscriptions from the binding of the volume in which the following forty one sketches, in black and white chalk on grey or blue paper, are mounted when they are presented to Ashmolean Museum by Miss Field and Miss Susan Field, in November 1922. [?] which often sketches are [?]attributed to J.S. Cotman, but only two or three of [?] those with characteristic notes in J.S. Cotman's writing are quite certainly his, although some others may, by comparison with two authentic sketches in the same method in his James Reeve collection, British Museum or safely assigned to him. The hesitant draughtsmanship and boyish handwriting on two or three of them dated 1828. When Miles Edmund Cotman was 18, make it safe to attribute those to him. For the remainder it seemed impossible, even when they are placed beside similar drawings by both father and son at the British Museum, for [?] Laurence Binyon, whose invaluable experience and advice are brought to bear on the [?], to decide at all positively, about their authorship. Miles Edmund Cotman lived at the above address 1842-1851. Vol:1 Miles E Cotman 8 Henrietta Street Brunswick Square and Kings College: Strand.
