Oct 8 1933— [Peter] snowbridge, who was staying with Mr Williams at the Mill, brought a large framed seascape for my inspection. It is signed J. S. Cotman in large scrawly lettering— A boat centre with figures, man of war, distance + with low coast behind—two masted lugger, distance left, lower of getty left, a very nasty overworked drawing, bad colour— might be an early S.[ illegible 1 word] but most likely some very pedestrian person— The signature an obvious forgery—13 x 9 ½

Went in Evening to Cheney Bassett, to see Mrs Paul Waterhouse. She showed us the portraits (in full watercolour) of D.T, Mrs D.T + Elizabeth, all by Davis— also the pencil outline portrait of Mary Anne, 1815, by J.S.C— The Davis drawings are poor + the etchings by Mrs D. T from [then] are better altogether— Mrs P. W has a very interesting album of sketch portraits + groups by Lady Palgrave, [illegible 1 word] family, her boys at all ages— her mother +sisters seated round a table, sewing— 2 sketches of [Newman] (1) reading his letters (2) preaching— dated (I think) 1839.
