    1. (LEFT) THE FIRST OF THE FOUR "STIFFENERS" USED BY COTMAN IN BACKING HIS WATER-COLOUR REPRODUCED IN NO. 5 (SEE OPPOSITE PAGE): AN INSCRIPTION IN THE ARTIST'S OWN HAND.

    The inscription reads: "J.S. Cotman, with respectful compliments to G. Buckle, Esq. View near the Book House, Chepstow. July 30th, 1801."
