Dear Major Kitson,
Some months ago I wrote to inform you of an oil painting attributed to J.S. Cotman which belongs to Major Foster, the mother in law of my friend Andrew Corbett in whose keeping it is at present. I cannot help thinking that my letter may have gone astray, or that (as I heard afterwards you were out of England) it may have followed you without reaching its destination.
The picture since I wrote has been seen and certified by Tancred Borenius and has been sent by Mr Corbett for the inspection of the committee of the art gallery at Norwich, who [?] with a letter which was difficult to understand, as it ignored Borenius' attribution and described the picture as probably by a second - rate master of the Norwich school. In any case they did not want to have it. Since then it has been seen by Professor Constable, now living in the village,
