John Varley

John Varley (1778 - 1842) was a founder member of the Old Watercolour Society in 1804, a prolific artist and popular teacher. He made tours of Wales between 1799 and 1802 and to Yorkshire in 1803 (with the patronage of Edward Lascelles of Harewood) and these continued to provide inspiration for the rest of his career. He was also a influential writer on landscape painting.
He taught drawing to David Cox, John Linnell, C. Cope and others.
