George Cattermole

1800 - 1868

George Cattermole (10 August 1800 – 24 July 1868) was an English painter and illustrator. Born in Norfolk, Cattermole moved to London in 1814 where he worked with the architectural draughtsman John Britton on his illustrations for 'The Cathedral Antiquities of Great Briton'. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819 and later became a member of the Water-Colour Society. In the 1830s, under the influence of Bonnington's costume pieces which were then in vogue, he became interested in figure painting, placing his historical subjects in romantic settings. In 1839 he declined a knighthood for the watercolour 'The Diet of Spires 1525'. His oil paintings did not meet with success. A victim of the prejudice against watercolour artist, which continued into the nineteenth century, he was forced to resign from the Water-Colour Society in 1852, in order to be considered for election as an Associate if the Royal Academy, which supposedly offered better access to wealthy patrons.
