William Callow

Born in Greenwich, Callow was apprenticed to the engravers Theodore and Thales Fielding in Paris, in 1825. Her was fellow pupil of Charles Bentley and worked with and for the artist Thomas Shotter Boyes. He continued to live and work on the Continent giving drawing lessons to the children of Louis Phillipe. He undertook annual walking and sketching tours from 1835 visiting France, Italy, Switzerland and the Rhine. It was not until 1841 that he returned to England and settled in London. He was one of the few artists allowed to transgress the Water-Colour Society's residency rules, exhibiting with them from 1838, in which year he became an Associate. From 1866 to 1870 he was the Society's Secretary.
