The Cotman Collection | Beaumont, George Howland Sir, 1753 - 1827

Sir George Howland Beaumont

1753 - 1827

7th Baron Beaumont
A British amateur painter and art patron. He was taught drawing at Eton by Alexander Cozens. A friend of John Sell Cotman and patron of Constable, he was a vehement critic of J M W Turner.
He was integral to the creation of the National Gallery. After visiting Italy, he decided that Britain needed a better education of the Old Masters. He donated 16 paintings of his own collection to the government in 1821, on the condition that the collection be added to and a suitable building aquired. The National Gallery was opened to the public in 1924.
