1911 Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leeds. Member of the Leeds Art Club. In 1923 left Leeds to serve as Master of University College, Oxford, until 1934.
Contemporary of Kitson. Championed the work of British watercolour artists such as Cotman, particularly via his membership of the Leeds Art Club.
