John White Abbott

British, 1763 - 1851

Abbott was an amateur artist and an apothecary of Exeter. He exhibited oil paintings at the Royal Academy from 1793. His uncle James White introduced him to artists John Downman, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Francis Towne, the latter becoming his teacher. He undertook a sketching tour of Scotland and the Lakes in 1791, and one of Monmouthshire in 1797, but otherwise his landscapes are in and around his native Devon. In 1825 he inherited the estate if Fardlands near Exeter and retired from his profession.
