Son of Robert Dixon of Tombland, Norwich. Pharmacist in Exchange Street, Norwich. He treated Ann Cotman (wife of John Sell Cotman) and their daughter, Ann Cotman. His home was in Thorpe, near Norwich. A friend of the Cotmans, Joseph Geldart and Thomas Lound, he was an amateur painter himself. His letters to John Joseph Cotman, 1834-35, are in the Kitson archive.
