William Jackson Hooker

A botanist and he Director of Kew Gardens, Hooker was knighted in 1836. He married Dawson Turner's eldest daughter, Maria Sarah (1797–1872) and was introduced to Sir Joseph Banks by Dawson Turner in 1806. He was elected to the Linnean Society of London in 1806 and in 1820, with Banks's recommendation, he was appointed regius professor of botany at Glasgow University. In April 1841 Sir William Hooker was appointed the first full-time director of the royal gardens at Kew.
