Nicknamed "The Calculating Boy," he was a child prodigy mathematician who was exhibited at fairs when he was a child by his father. He went on to study at Edinburgh University and became an engineer, working initially with railways, but branching out into most aspects of engineering.
Aged 12, he was drawn by John Sell Cotman at a fair in Great Yarmouth.
