Inherited Brandsby Hall in North Yorkshire in 1782 from his father.
Married Theresa Anne Enfield. They had three daughters, Anne (known as 'Wowie'), Mary Catherine, Katherine Henrietta and Harriet, and one son, Francis. He employed John Sell Cotman to teach his wife and children painting.
