Utagawa Hiroshige

1797 - 1858

Utagawa Hiroshige rivals Hokusai as one of the last great masters of Ukiyo-e, though in every other way they were a study in opposites. Rather than confronting the confusion and chaos that characterised the end of the Edo period, Hiroshige sought escape in the serene landscapes of rural Japan. The results of his work are represented in his two famous series, 'Fifty Three Stages of the Tokaido', published by Hoeido and 'Sixty Nine Stages of the Kisokaido' produced in collaboration with Eisen.
