Katsushika Hokusai

Japanese, 1760 - 1849

Hokusai called himself the 'mad painter' and was one of the most important artists of this period. His career spanned over 70 years, beginning in the Kansei era (1789-1801) with lyrical genre paintings depicting graceful women. During the Bunka era (1804-1818) long historical romances (yomihon) became popular and Hokusai provided illustrations for these. Hokusai also created the new genre of landscape prints, producing such well known masterpieces as 'Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji', a series which, because of its success, came to include 46 prints.
