Laurence Binyon had a long and successful career in English arts and letters. Binyon took a position at the British Museum, in the department of printed books, and in 1895 moved to the department of prints and drawings where he would stay until retiring in 1933, with promotions to assistant keeper and keeper along the way. Binyon described Cotman's work as 'the most perfect examples of pure watercolour ever made in Europe'.
