not agreeing and waiting each for the other and losing, frequently your walk, at least at the particular time set apart, besides when you let the dog [illegible 1 word] you jump about in a kind of extasy of enthusiasm which we all feel at times but know not the immediate cause, he does the same, in fact he imitates the old . When in Rome do as Rome does.
My Dr John I hope you will never be over scrupulous at least I know you will not in writing to me for remember it is not the particular words written that I look at, of course if it contains any particular secret it is a little more interesting, but it is knowing that at a certain time yesterday or the Day before, that you were beyond doubt thinking of me and I have the proof in my hand. What matters whether you have news or not even if the letter is so hurried as I can scarce read it, in fact that in one sense is all the better because your thought of me at a time when you had hardly time to put your thoughts on paper. You know what I mean John although I express myself but poorly. I too hope to improve in letter writing and you know well there is none living that I would sooner practise on so you may expect to hear from me as often as you deem my time will allow. You may well say in one of your letters we appeared to endure each other better of late, not but I always knew you and loved you, but we were never thrown so immediately in each others way as when I was staying with you.

(This appears to be an unfinished letter.

Written in pencil at the top at the beginning:- )
