    My dear John

    I have just been introduced to Mr. Miller, he happening to be here. He told me that he did not think that there was any chance for me at Liverpool for that there they did not give Salaries and that there were many young men there now trying, he told me the letter to Mr. Palgrave would not he thought be of the slightest Service as he had been the[[i]]re himself only two years and being a lawyer had no influence. He told me if I could get letters to the men I now mention I should stand a very fair chance. To Coop[[p]]er Benson & Co through J.J.Gurney, - Mr. Rathbon[[d]]e through Mr. Dowson’s either of Yarmouth or Norwich. He spells their names as I have written them I think wrong, but no matter - - Mr. Willson Through J.J. Gurney also. He says Mr. Morgan can get Mr. Gurney’s interest ask him or Mr. D. Gurney. I think perhaps you can. Mr. Dowsons’ interest I do not know who can get but perhaps you can also, these men are the more influential men in Liverpool. J.J. Gurney is frequently staying at the two first mentioned houses. If you can ask Gurney, I should advise you to walk or ride over if convenient immediately upon having this.

    I have received a negative answer from Raleigh. In fact every thing here is flat and withered. I could stay about 2 Months I fear the result. Upon my first coming I was advised to give my letter of Introduction to Mr. Potter! to Mr. Norris Mr. P. being from Town. I did but having occasion for it I received it again so yesterday hearing Mr. Potter had returned I wrote to him a short letter enclosing the
