    September 3rd. (?) 1835

    My dear Jack
Either you are very naughty - have not received the second package of pencils, or have not opened them and read the note contained therein. Which is it, one or other I conclude it must be or I should have heard from you. Pray put me out of suspense as soon as you conveniently can. I should be glad to know your movements. As you may know too, or may guess I want rather to make some money I wish you would take two or three of the best you have of mine to Freeman's and hear if he will try to dispose of them. You might even try Thirtle. The price not lower than 5 Guineas. The boy in the cowhouse may be one and there are three or four landscapes I think might perhaps go at that price. At all events tis worth trying as if they do not sell there is no harm done... do it speedily please. I am writing this at the College (as I shall take it to Dixons to night) where all goes well, nearly as many boys as last quarter already and new ones keep dropping in daily and old ones returning. On second thoughts Muskett perhaps might or would try to sell a drawing or two, Ask him. Yesterday Anne and I walked to Stark's, and had a pleasant evening, Stark and I took a delightful ramble after tea. do let me hear soon. When does Uncle come?
    Yours truly Miles E. Cotman.
If you are not in the humour to write commission Coz. Bess. - just to say the pencils are safe and that you will do as I request about the drawings or rather Freeman and will try
