Addressed to Mr. Jno. J. Cotman.

    August 18 X (1835)

    My dear John
I write to you by Walter who is coming down to you, agreeable to both your wishes. Poor fellow he is very unwell, disappointment I have no doubt is the foundation of it, and over anxiety. Both very active causes for illness, and quite sufficient of themselves to need any other. Without these, London would not have had the effect upon him, that it has had. We have as much air, and better than thousands breath with more advantage to themselves, than the best do with the anxious. You will have letters and Walter to tell you the News and all about us, for I feel I cannot as all my Letter-writing days are gone or at least suspended. I shall at all times be most happy to hear from you and Walter, and be most happy to hear of your Welfare and Success.
    Your affectionate Father
    J.S. Cotman
