My dear Cotman
I meant to have sent the Volume of Sketches much sooner, but since I last had the pleasure of seeing you I have been obliged to keep very quiet, in consequence of a sad attack of hemorrhege, which threatens frightful consequences, but thank God! all has subsided and I am again at my old work of staining paper.
I have sent the Sketches to the care of Messrs. Colnaghi & Co. Pall Mall East.
As I have long wished to possess your etchings in Norfolk, permit me to hope that you will do me favour of sending it in exchange for the Volume which I have the pleasure of offering, as a bait for such a catch. I am boldly pressing my petition in the dark not knowing but what the work I solicit is intrinsically, and in price, double the worth of my sketches.
Pray pardon me if in error, and I will act the friend and the tradesman the next time we meet - when by the way I shall be glad to receive the 5Gs: for Miss Thurlow's copy, as I dare not be proud, since I am poor, and must beg -
With every good wish
Ever truly yours
S. Prout.
J.S.Cotman Esq.
