    Note from John Sell Cotman to Mr Newton (ironmonger) and Kitson’s comments

    Cotman asks if Newton will remove stoves etc. when he leaves his house. A suit of armour is to be sold.

    Aug: 2nd 1834.
    St. Martin’s at Palace,
    Norwich.
    Mr Cotman presents his compliments to Mr Newton and requests whether it will be agreeable to him to take the stoves, ovens, coppers, etc, on his leaving his house at Michaelmas.
    The suit of armour which Mr Newton looked at is to be sold. The price 15 guineas.

    This note is written on the back of a larger pencil drawing (14¾ x 11¾) in the Reeve Collection, British Museum, called ‘The Artist’s Kitchen’. (No. 134.)
    It appears to be an early drawing, cf the watercolour in the coll[ectio]n of the Misses Bulwer – ‘Kitchen of the Artist’s Father’s house, Aug 22, 1801.

    In 1834 Cotman exhibited ‘A Study of Armour’ at the Old Water Colour Society’s exh[ibitio]n.

    Mr Newton was an ironmonger, in Norwich.

    The suit of armour was lot 147 in Cotman’s sale Sept: 12 1834 –
    ‘A complete suit of bright steel armour, consisting of a helmet, back & breast plates, epaulières, gauntlets, cuisses & knee caps’. £9.5.0.
