    My dearest Friend,
The battle is fought & won. The Principal has congratulated me as professor of Drawing to King’s College School. The preliminaries are not yet signed, but the Field is gained. Praise & thanks be to God for it, for my dear Family’s sake. Present my sincere respects to the most tried & constant of my many, many Friends. Pay my respects to Mr & Mrs Brightwen, who have been, I well know, most anxious on this business. My first call was on Lady Palgrave, as in duty bound, and this day I invited myself to tea to talk over terms to be laid before the Council. This at the particular advice of the Principal, who is, as you know, just the man to admire & esteem at first sight. My dear Sir, I hope soon to see you in Yarmouth.
I remain, my dear Friend, ever your devoted Servant and obliged
    John S. Cotman.

P.S. Dear Sir, I recollect perfectly your advice – Terms must be laid before the Council. They shall be moderate. The Principal said the College was poor; when it was rich I sh[oul]d be considered.
