    Northumberland and Durham, but, though he was frequently at Hesleyside, no picture by him, or indeed by anyone else, of the 14th century tower at Hesleyside, pulled down by my grandfather’s trustees (maledictions on them) about 1800 has ever come to light. If only J. S. C. had been there a few years earlier, there would doubtless have been a picture of it by him.

    Charlton, on the N. side of the Tyne, just opposite to Hesleyside, was the original home of the family from early in the 13th century, though they then held lands at Hesleyside too. There is only a foot bridge there now. I wonder what the bridge was of which you have seen sketches.

    Would it be too much trouble to give me the reference to my grandmother’s letter in the British Museum to which you refer. I should like to go and have a look at it some day.
