[To Dawson Turner] October 15th 1806.
    Norwich.

    Dear Sir,
Since I have been home I have been so much engaged with painting that everything else seems to have given place to it. I have now almost finished what I must call my first picture. The subject of it Shipping, Sea Shore & figures - but I have much to learn in this great field of study to become tolerably good - for more must be done in this branch of Art than in Water Colours, or, nothing is done. - Respecting teaching, my terms are half a guinea the lesson, and happy shall I be if I can be of any service to Mrs Turner. Dear Sir
    Respectfully your obliged servant
    John S. Cotman
