    My dear Sir,
In addition to the credentials you are acquainted with I have Lady Palgrave's and Thos. Phillips Esq. R.A. Sir Francis Palgrave informs me that Sir Robert Inglis told him they were sufficient. I need not add Sir Fras. and Lady Palgrave are doing everything for me. He is either going to see or write Sir R. Smirke in my favour - that gentleman being the Artist appointed to examine the Specimens of the Candidates. Tho. Phillips is intimate with Smirke and I either take another note to Mr. Phillips or call upon him to exert himself in my favour with Mr. Smirke.
I feel all has been done and is doing for me that Friendship and Interest can possibly do - of that I am certain. Should I succeed I will exert myself not only not to disgrace the good opinion so openly and handsomely bestowed upon me - but to deserve it still further by my exertions.
My sincere regards and thanks to my Friends at Yarmouth.
I am, My Dear Sir, as ever
    and your obliged
    J. S. Cotman.
