    To A. R. Freebairn Esq
    April 6th 1832

    Dear Sir
I return the proof you did send and I have agreeable to your wishes made some few remarks, which I hope will not be found too much for you to attend to, as you say in your Letter, don't slave me".

I regret extremely the delay that has taken place on my part, but an illness of many months standing is my apology. Not but what I have taken the proof frequently in hand but my head would not conquer the demand upon it. And I find by sad experience the hand can do nothing without its guided by the head. Dear Sir
    Your very Obt Servt.
    J. S. Cotman.
P.S. I think with you the proofs were wiped too close.
    overleaf.
    P.S. 2nd.
I beg to say distinctly and without flattery I think you have taken great pains with the plate, and I like it extremely. This might have come with a better graver sooner. But many things are held back that are first thought of.
