    To Samuel Woodward.
    May 22. 1829.

    Dear Sir,
I return your very ingenious Paper. It is upon a subject which was once highly interesting to me. I am sorry to say circumstances have made it otherwise. I have labored(sic) in that way and to so little purpose that instead of it being a pleasure to return to it, as it ought to be, it is now a pain. May your speculations prove more pleasurable to you in the sincere wish of a worn-out labour and your well- wisher & servant.
    J. S. Cotman.
[Woodward correspondence vol III. No.52 communicated by W. R. Dawson. S.W. (1790- 1838) born at Norwich, went to work at 7 as a shawl- weaver. J. J. Gurney & D. T. aided him. He sent to the Soc of Arts several papers, afterwards printed in Archaeologia. among them Observations on the Round Church Towers of Norfolk. (1829.) ]
