Whistler was a seer, and was always trying to deliver his message, which was simple, that out of the facts of this world an artist must find beauty and express it. This is the struggle of the artist in which the greatest fail at times. No one artist's confession of faith can ever he a complete guide to the artists of the future ; all we can be quite certain of is that no artist will for ever remain the lawgiver any more than that the opinions of the most famous critic will always be accepted. The personal experience of 50 years provides material enough to make one inclined to accept this law of the change of view, and history confirms it.
