April 6 1934
Read a paper on the watercolours of J. S. Cotman at the Art worker's Guild— [illegible 1 word] the [illegible 1 word] in the [chair]. Afterwards Constable showed about 40 studies of Cotman's drawings. Then there was a (rather desultory) discussion.
April 9—11
two [illegible 2 words] sent me 3 Cotman drawings — 'The Wolf Hunter' , 'a page on horseback', + 'the [miser]'— all late drawings— to dispose of. I tried Dawson at the Fine Arts, [illegible 1 word] + Vicars, but none of them would make an offer of any kind— so I sent them back.
April 9
I visited Gibbons, [illegible 1 word], Abbey House, Westminister— He showed me the very early Cotman (? Conway Castle) he bought from Samuel— much faded, but a fine design. He promised a [illegible 1 word].
I dined (at Arts Club) with L. S [illegible 1 word] on the 7th + saw his collection— I took his (1) 'Cader' (2) monochrome of boat with sail (Cader again) + (3) his [illegible 1 word] to Wallace [illegible 1 word] to be photographed.
April 11
Called at [Cotauld] [illegible 1 word]: 20 [Portman] Sq, + saw Charles Johnson + [illegible 2 words A.R I.B.A— went with dates of Cotman pictures with letter for the editions de luxe of the B.A exhibition at R. A Saw 2 Cotman was at Christie's— a large sea piece (c. 1830) rather good in a dull way wemt for 110 guineas, a smalled sea piece very brilliant + deftly drawn, might be by M. E. C (28 giuneas).
