    Dec 12 1933

    Went to [illegible 1 word] to [illegible 1 word] house: examined the 2 lovely Cotman oils with the help of [slips]. Saw again the Cader Idris (which V. R admires) + the rather clumsy Normandy house watercolour in the drawing room.

    Called on Meatyward and bought the ‘study of rocks’ in lot 190 ‘Sketches by [Leslie] etc’ in Christie’s sale of Sutton Palmer’s collection (Dec 11) Oppe asked Meatyard to go to 6 guineas, Walker bid 10 guineas, Thomson gave 11 guineas, sold it to Meatyward for 14 guines + I gave M 17 guineas— Is it a ‘greater’ drawing?

    Dec 20 1933

    Went to [illegible 1 word] in the J. S Cotman [Emmer] [green]— J.S.C has just acquired a large oil ‘Barges on the Medway’ from a junkshop in Devon for 7.10-0 the [illegible 1 word] on the + is [illegible 1 word] + 6 [illegible 1 word] + wind-mills misted in the low shore. I feel confident it is a good M.E.C He gave me a drawing copy ‘Cotman 1836’— of an old horse + Norfolk plough.

    Went to the Leeds art gallery (J Rothenstein away) Saw R. H. K’s Cotman drawings— the ‘Croyland’ very lovely—

    Jan 5 1934 Went, in E, to the private view of the British art exhibition at R.A— with Julia [Merivale] + Julia [Robertson] + E to tea at the arts club.
