Jan: 17, 1933. Lawrence Binyon called at 2 and stayed till 4, looking round my collection. He was delighted with the 'Study of Trees' in the dining room. He was interested in the 'primitives' & wondered how & why Cotman got away from his first mode of expression. He thought the foreground of the 'Barnard Castle' a little ragged.

    A Paul Nash Drawing
Sir, I hardly think you will want to continue this correspondence, but it is interesting to hear that Mr. Nash was a pupil of Girtin and Cotman. I was looking at drawings by these two masters only yesterday and if it is still possible to them, I feel they would turn in their graves if they could see their pupil’s work.
I am a pupil of Michael Angelo? Poor old Mike!

    John Sell Cotman
Sir, Through the courteous assistance given me by innumerable private owners I have been able during the last several years to build up a very large and fairly comprehensive catalogue of the works of John Sell Cotman. But the present whereabouts of a considerable proportion of recorded works still remains a mystery, among the missing being a number of oil paintings which I particularly wish to include and study. If owners of such works could see their way to get in touch with me they would perform an invaluable service.
    H. Isherwood Kay.
