Fanny died first, quite a natural death. They were both over 60 & I should say neither of them ever had a thrill in their lives. Julia used to have pashes for Curates but alas nothing came of them. She was mad about vivisection - wrote marvellous letters by the mile. No one was safe. The King, Lloyd George, Archbishop of Canterbury etc etc & had the most astonishing replies.
Had I ever said damn in their presence I was sure headed for Hell.
They were a very pathetic couple - from about 18-50 they taught in village schools. Ye Gods what a life.
    Sincerely yours
    John S. Cotman
