    Dear Sydney,
A superb Cotman – Barnard Castle – wide open landscape, full colour, blues & greens not quite finished was anon. in a lot at Sotheby’s today. I went up to £50 with you or Norman in view – Norman being without my knowledge standing behind me all the time! It was bought by Meatyard acting thro’ the clerk so that I didn’t know that he was bidding & he said that he didn’t know that I was. Go & see the drawing & buy it.
    Yrs ever
    Paul Oppé
Not signed. Inscribed Barnard Castle at back & I should say done shortly after the visit, like H. Bacon’s large Greta.
