These portraits are pasted in to the 'History &
Antiquities of the City of Bristol' by William
Barrett, Surgeon. F.S.A.. Bristol printed by
William Pine. 1789. & can be had of 7 named
Bristol booksellers. J. Norton being one of the
number. Mrs Mitchell thought he also kept
sold paintings.
Manson (of Christie's) married a Norton, & this
book came to Mrs Mitchell thro' this aunt.
Mrs Mitchell has an oil painting attributed
to P. Veronesi, with this label-
"Presented to by Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A
to P.Norton. 1826."
John Norton F.R.I.B.A. of Bristol (step-father of
Mrs Mitchell) was architect of many houses,
including Elvedon & churches.
\ WIlliam Barrett. 1733-1789.(D.N.B) was the dupe of
Chatterton. "Dead, tho' the book is, and as it had been from
the first, as an authority, it will long be regarded as a
curiosity from its association with 'the marvellous boy'
Chatterton."
