Oct. 14. 1930. Went with Sir Michael Sadler to
see the Newman tablet at Littlemore, afterwards
looked again at the Cotmans in the Master's Lodgings,
Univ: Coll: The very beautiful little 'interior of a
fulling mill near Mallwydd, N.Wales, J.S.Cotman
1802' - is the best 1802 drawing I've seen, lovely
colour, very direct & clear, pencil showing
everywhere.
His charcoal drawing on grey paper of the 'New
bridge at Durham' is much rubbed & rather
flat. His upright charcoal on grey paper of
Gilling Castle is very good indeed, it differs from
my pencil sketch, but was probably taken from it
He has a great many of the 'Bulwer' Nfk Churches,
including some very good early monochromes.
A delightful early (1803) of an ill-shapen house
in front of a gateway, (?) Helmsley Castle gateway,
is very quaint.
3 very good Thirtles, (1) Interior of triforium
Norwich Cathl. (2) W. End of Castle Acre, with
Prior's Lodging, (3) Boats & Buildings on the river at Norwich.
all in monochrome.
