    Dear Mr. Kitson,
Many thanks for your letter of the 10th. instant
relative to the Cotman portraits. In view of the 1861 Sale
Catalogue entry it seems probable that Murphy was the painter
of the two portraits belonging to Grahame Cotman. You have
at any rate made out a very good case. They were loaned to
the 1927 Exhibition as examples of the work of H.B.Love and I am
afraid we did not go into the question of attribution very
    deeply.
We have recently had offered to the museum a crayon
portrait of J.S.Cotman. The owner wants £30 for it and as I
should rather like you to see it before the offer is brought
before my committee on January 7th. I am sending it to you per
registered post insured for £50 in accordance with the owner's
request. There is no history with the portrait which seems to
be undoubtebly of John Sell and in view if the initials may
    possibly be a self-portrait.
    With kind regards,
    Yours sincerely,

                                                                                    FRANK LENEY.
                                                                                                         Curator.

    Sydney D.Kitson, Esq.
