A pencil drawing of Wheatacre Ch[urch] by E. Setchel.
— C.F.B[ell] writes - "Copy of a drawing attributed to Cotman in the Bulwer Coll[ectio]n (1925). This is in water-colour & in an extremely primitive style, apparently earlier than 1800. So that if it be by Cotman, & the existence of the present copy supports this attribution, it must be one of his earliest works."
N[orman] D[arnton] L[upton] & I saw this at Walker's Galleries 8.10.29. It is a good Cotman w[ater]c[olour] of 1806-8. The checkered tower gives it a slightly bizarre look, but otherwise it is a normal example of the very 'Cotmanesque' work of those years.
The drawing copy No. (bottom l. corner) 479 -
corresponds with near Nos. - e.g. '476. Cotman' - a tower w[ater]c[olour] - R. J. Colman. c.1808 & '484. J. S. Cotman' - pencil drawing on buff paper [479 is also buff paper] Reeve Coll[ectio]n Brit[ish] Mus[eum] - c.1808.
