    1. Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle (1748-1825), then owned Castle Howard. He married in 1770, Lady M[argaret] Leveson-Gower, d[aughter] of the 1st Marquess of Stafford. They had 4 sons & 3 daughters.
    L[or]d Carlisle was the friend of Charles James Fox, the guardian of L[or]d Byron; a liberal patron [of] the Fine Arts, with a cultivated mind, polished manners & a taste for writing poetry. (D.N.B.)

    (2) Nov. 30, 1805. J.S.C. writes to D[awson] T[urner] from Charlotte St, Portland Place – “My tour this summer has been confirmed to Yorks & Durham ….. colouring from nature.”
