{verso} quite surprised me, whoever painted it, in my opinion, it is well done. On a little narrow fillet of wood gilt, at the base of the picture is "JS Cotman by A. Clint" and was put there long before it became the property of Prince Frederick, and quite possibly when the portrait was put in its present frame. It certainly was not painted {recto} by A. Clint of whom you wrote. The writing on the top of the back of the frame was by Prince Frederick when he bought it, and from it, I gather he had it a very long time.
    I am
    Yours sincerely
    E. Farrer
