Oct: 3. Went to Brecon. The 2 bridges drawn by Cotman are on a tributary of the main stream, the Usk. The lower bridge has now been rebuilt: but we saw a print (1813) of the 2 bridges in a cottage by the lower bridge. Cotman has placed the castle on the r instead of the l in his view of the upper bridge looking up to the Cathedral (Sir H Bacon)
On to the Devil's Bridge, to lunch; the site has become a 'view point' and is vulgarised: on to Aberystwyth. The sketch in B.M. [British Museum] by Cotman of July 16, 1800 is the Castle here. On to Dolgelly [Dolgellau], for tea. Saw Cader Idris with fine clouds and shadows. Noted Cotman's view from the Barmouth estuary, Harlech and a warm welcome at Llys Bach at 6.30.
Oct. 4. With Eva & her dog, to Tan-y-Bwlch. On to Port Aberglaslyn, Beddgelert (saw site of Girtin's large B.M. [British Museum] drawing) by Quellyn Lake [Llyn Cwellyn], to Carnarvon [Carnarfon], where we lunched. On by Llyn Peris, Dolbardern Castle, & the Pass of Llanberis to Capel Curig for tea. Saw the little church there which has an inscription over w. door to say it was repaired in 1804. Back to the bridge higher up than Tan-y-Bwlch, & so back to Harlech - without the Scout's whistle.
Oct. 5. Went back to Llyn Peris, where N. D. L satisfied himself that the Miss Bulwer's drawing was Llyn Peris & the pass of Llanberis - & not Llyn Ogwen.
